COVERS I. a fraction of the whole
Between 1953 and 1959, Luis Seoane (Buenos Aires, 1910 – A Coruña, 1979) compiled some of the illustrations and artwork that were on the covers of the books that he had worked on as a publisher and published them in three volumes: Libro de tapas (1953), Segundo libro de tapas (1957) and Figurando recuerdos (1959). These books were created while in exile, where a generation of European artists and intellectuals found shelter, and they encapsulate Luis Seoane’s contribution as an artist and a designer to the “golden age of Argentine book publishing”
Seoane’s work cataloguing the artwork on the covers of the books he published, and treating them as inventoriable pieces in three compilation books, is what inspired this project. COVERS I. a fraction of the whole ventures into a line of work that goes back to Seoane’s compilatory effort, where the boundaries between artistic creation and editorial design become blurred.
The first instalment of this project has served to spur the research and exhibition of published works that have gone beyond their role as books to become art pieces. That is how their creators envisioned them. These books, their covers, are the medium for the artistic message. They lack the poetic intentionality that according to Seoane was an inherent part of publishing, and the historical reference element, as he wrote in the introduction to his Segundo libro de tapas (Editorial Bonino, Buenos Aires, 1957): “Every book has a history, separate from its author and its theme. A history of its publishing process”.
The covers of this selection of books tell a story that is linked to their own artistic ideals —ironic, aesthetic, performative…— which reveal part of the intentionality of the piece on display and the full measure of the aesthetic development for which they were first conceived. They reflect on the functionality of the means of communication (taking publishing as just another tool) in the pairing made up of medium and message. The name of this first instalment, which is part of the activities of the FFOCO photography festival, has a subtitle: “a fraction of the whole”. This is not a trivial phrase, it alludes to the popular belief that “everything can be found in a book”. Although in this case only “a fraction of the whole” is visible. The whole that is hidden behind the covers of a book and is reflected in the descriptions that gallery owners, collectors and artists have given of their books, each one with their own peculiarities, which we have kept here.

TAPAS I. una parte del todo
Entre 1953 y 1959, Luis Seoane (Buenos Aires, 1910 – A Coruña 1979) realizó tres publicaciones compilatorias sobre ilustraciones y diseños que se imprimieron sobre las tapas y portadas de algunas ediciones realizadas a su cuidado: 1º Libro de Tapas (1953), 2º Libro de Tapas (1957) y Figurando recuerdos (1959). Publicaciones concebidas en el territorio del exilio que albergó a una generación de creadores e intelectuales europeos. Y que constituyen una particular síntesis de lo supuso la aportación de Luis Seoane como artista/diseñador a la “época dorada de la edición argentina”.
Y precisamente esa catalogación que Seoane le adjudica al diseño de las cubiertas de sus publicaciones, otorgándole el tratamiento de pieza inventariable en tres libros compilatorios, es la noción que ha inspirado a este proyecto que con el nombre de TAPAS I. una parte del todo; se arriesga a descubrir una línea de trabajo que recoge la idea compilatoria de Seoane, diluida en una frontera líquida en la que la creación artística cabalga sobre las premisas del diseño editorial.
Con la primera entrega de este proyecto se ha comenzado a investigar y a exhibir piezas editoriales que han transgredido la función editora para convertirse en piezas fundamentalmente artísticas. Y tal es así como fueron concebidas por sus creadores. Los libros, las tapas de los mismos, son el medio empleado para el mensaje artístico. Carecen de la intencionalidad poética que para Seoane formaba parte del hecho intrínseco de editar, así como del valor de referencia histórica, tal y como él afirma en la introducción de su Segundo libro de Tapas (Editorial Bonino, Buenos Aires, 1957): “Cada libro tiene una historia, independiente del autor y del tema que trata. Una historia referida a su edición”.
Las tapas de estos proyectos seleccionados cuentan una historia referenciada a su propio ideal artístico: irónicos, estéticos, performativos… que desvelan parte de la intencionalidad de la pieza exhibida y la plenitud del desarrollo estético para el que fueron concebidos en su día. Y confrontan sobre la funcionalidad del medio de comunicación (tomando la edición como una herramienta más del sistema) en el binomio sobre el medio y el mensaje. De modo que las tapas de un libro son un medio que contienen, a su vez, otro medio
Esta primera entrega, incluida dentro de la programación del festival de fotografía FFOCO, lleva como subtítulo “una parte del todo”. Una frase que no es baladí y que enlaza con la idea popular en la que se enuncia que “todo está en los libros”. Aunque en este caso sólo podemos ver “una parte del todo”. Ése que está oculto tras las tapas de un libro y que queda reflejado en las descripciones que galeristas, coleccionistas, artistas y particulares han querido dar de sus libros, cada una con su peculiaridad que aquí se ha respetado.
