The work of Voula Papaioannou (Lamia, 1898 – Athens, 1990) has been classed within the so-called “humanitarian photography” that abounded in Europe in the 1940s, around the time of the Second World War. However, the collections in her archive give grounds to talk of an articulated documentary project, with criteria that transcend more nostalgic or dramatic representations.
Voula Papaioannou Cabinet seeks to shed light on the photographer’s work criteria, her iconography and storylines, and the persistence of certain methodologies which reveal some of her thematic cycles. Hence the exhibition presentation, which invokes the contact prints preserved in her photographic archives.

La obra de Voula Papaioannou (Lamía, 1898 – Atenas, 1990) se ha inscrito dentro de la llamada «fotografía humanitaria» que abundó en Europa durante los años cuarenta, en torno a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Sin embargo, los fondos de su archivo permiten referirse a un proyecto documental articulado, con criterios que superan las representaciones más nostálgicas o dramáticas. Gabinete Voula Papaioannou pretende hacer visibles los criterios de trabajo de la autora, sus líneas iconográficas y argumentales, y la persistencia de ciertas metodologías que ponen de manifiesto algunos de sus ciclos temáticos; de ahí la presentación expositiva, que remite a las hojas de contacto conservadas en sus archivos fotográfico.
